Implementing the Perinatal Equity and Anti-Discrimination Programme

In May 2026, NHS England, in partnership with the NHS Race and Health Observatory, launched the Perinatal Equity and Anti-Discrimination Programme (PEADP), a national initiative spanning seven NHS regions and delivered through 14 cohorts. Its purpose is to confront a persistent and unacceptable disparity:

Black women in England remain 3.7 times more likely to die during or after pregnancy than their white counterparts.

Recent MBRRACE-UK data (2021–2023) underscores the urgency. Maternal mortality rates stand at 28.21 per 100,000 births for Black women and 16.74 for Asian women, while Black babies are more than twice as likely to be stillborn as white babies. The Nursing and Midwifery Council has now characterised racism in maternity care as a national emergency.

From evidence to execution

This webinar will explore how NHS trusts are operationalising PEADP’s five core components, what insights are emerging from early cohorts, and how clinical leaders can translate programme intent into sustained cultural and clinical change.

Attendees will leave with:

  • A clear understanding of PEADP’s five components and the 14-cohort rollout structure across seven NHS regions.
  • Practical frameworks for engaging clinical leadership and creating anti-racist cultures within maternity units
  • Insight into the NMC’s new anti-racism curriculum principles and what they mean for midwifery education from 2026–27
  • Evidence-based tools for identifying local challenges and measuring progress on equity outcomes
  • Case studies from early PEADP cohorts on what is and isn’t working
  • Actionable next steps for trust leads, midwifery educators, and policy leads attending
